Penile Curvature, Normal or Disease

Some men have a bent penis to the right or left side, up or down when experiencing an erection. Generally this condition is considered not a problem and does not need special handling. But if accompanied by other symptoms, such as pain, crooked penis can be a symptom of a serious illness. Some men have a bent penis as a normal anatomic variation of the penis. The condition of the bent penis does not require special treatment if the curve is not too significant, has no difficulty during intercourse or problems with ejaculation, and does not feel pain in the penis.

Conditions That Cause a Bent Penis

What are the common causes of crooked penis? Inside the penis, there is a sponge-like tissue that will flow with blood and expand when a man is erect or sexually aroused. In general, curved penis occurs when the tissue does not expand evenly, due to differences in normal penis anatomy. However, some curved penis conditions may need special attention if caused by the following situations:
  • Peyronie's disease.
  • Autoimmune disease.
  • Penile injury.
  • Abnormalities in the buffer network, which are inherited in
Crooked penis can also occur in infants who experience hypospadias, where the end of the urinary tract is under the penis.

Be aware of Peyronie's Disease

The cause of Peyronie's disease is not known with certainty. However, this condition is thought to occur due to repeated injuries to the blood vessels in the penis. In addition, there are also allegations that this disease is caused by certain genetic conditions that can be passed down in the family. But please note that Peyronie's disease is not caused by sexually transmitted diseases or cancer. This disease can be experienced by men at any age, but most often occurs in men aged over 40 years. Men who have recently undergone surgery or prostate cancer radiation have a higher risk of developing Peyronie's disease. Aside from an erect penis when erect, this disease usually has other characteristics:
  • Pain in the penis when erect.
  • Thickening or lumps occur on the shaft of the penis.
  • There is a change in the shape of the penis. The shape resembles an hourglass.
  • The length and circumference of the penis changes.
In severe cases, this crooked penis can make it difficult for sufferers to have sex and penetrate. Furthermore, Peyronie's disease is also at risk of causing erectile dysfunction. Doctors can usually detect Peyronie's disease from a medical history, physical examination, and ultrasound of the penis if needed. After the diagnosis is confirmed and the curvature of the penis is curved to exceed 30 degrees, the doctor will generally provide treatment through oral medication, topical or injection drugs, and radiation therapy. However, this can be unsuccessful or less effective. In very severe cases, Peyronie's disease must be treated with surgical removal of part of the penis area or by implanting a tool to straighten the penis. Another method of surgery to treat Peyronie's disease is by shock wave lithotripsy. However, surgical procedures on the penis can cause side effects such as impotence. The general surgical procedure will only be done about a year after being diagnosed. This is because the penis is bent is expected (and generally) will improve by itself without special handling. To prevent complications, it is highly recommended to see a doctor if your penis is bent and feels painful when erect.
